Stand and Speak With Confidence and Ease

When you have to give a speech, does your heart race ... your legs tremble... your stomach flutter ... and your mind gets completely blank?

Text Box:       If public speaking makes you nervous, anxious and even downright scared, you’re not alone: 3 in 4 people feel exactly the same way.

You see, most people don’t like being the centre of attention, and they feel uncomfortable when they are being watched or stared at.

In fact, for years I felt exactly the same.

I was a good pupil, but at school when I had to speak in front of my class it was pure hell. University was no better. I was okay with small groups, but literality froze in front of 25 to 300 students.

But what petrified me the most was when I changed careers. I went from human resource manager – behind a desk - to a “Social Integration” trainer.  And, as a trainer I had to stand up and speak in front of a young audience EVERY DAY!

So to boost my comfort level and upgrade my speaking skills, my manager suggested I take a theatre course to develop more confidence.

I joined a theatrical training group for adults that focused on theatrical expression. I learned classical theatre, improvisation, comedia dell’arte and clown. And, there I pushed myself and eventually expanded my comfort zone, and developed the courage to become an actor.

I also used my Theatre training in my new job. Doing the same expression exercises, put my students at ease. They liked it because they played and they laughed and that was an occasion for them to progress.

Of course, sometimes I still get tongue tied.  But now, when I feel nervous, I take a deep breath, forget that I’m drawing a complete blank, and the words come flooding back to me.

Theatre training gave me confidence, charisma and enthusiasm, plus a way to clarify my expressions. Every day, as I practised to become an apple, a fork, the Statue of Liberty, a peculiar policeman, a seductive psychoanalyst, or a handsome knight in love with a witch, my confidence grew. Theatre training gave me the tools and techniques to overcome my fear of public speaking ... and theatre training can help you overcome your fear and anxiety too.
