Great Leaders Are Not Born, It’s no secret that today’s managers and executives need strong leadership skills to deal with the unique challenges and abundant opportunities that come their way. In unfamiliar and uncertain times, a good leader can develop a high-performing team and key strategic alliances inside and outside of their organization. Let me tell you a story about a challenge that I faced, and how important leadership skills were to my project’s success. It was 2005, and the Theatrical Company I worked for asked me to create a musical production in a very short amount of time, without any resources or budget. As a director, I had a good reputation in the Theatrical industry; however, creating a musical was certainly out of my comfort zone. You see, I had invested years to build a network of quality actors, but I didn’t have access to many singers, dancers or musicians that would take on such a daunting project for free. None the less I remained enthusiastic and focused. I began by promoting the project and auditioning as many actors and actresses that I could find. Fortunately, my reputation as a first-rate director, allowed me to find ten brilliant actresses fairly quickly.
However, these actresses had such strong personalities, I faced numerous challenges. And, for the musical to be successful, I had to use every ounce of my leadership skills. First, I had to sell the entire team on my unique vision, and then motivate, persuade and influence the actresses into my way of thinking. To accomplish this, I made sure each actress had the role they wanted. I also had to lead with confidence, and respect my actress’ limitations. Next I had to find a variety of volunteers to help with costumes, set design, advertising and promotion. I had to delegate specific duties, and help everyone set realistic, timely goals. Each person was asked to do far more than usual, and rehearsals were intense. Most of the actresses had no formal singing or dance training, so I had to help them overcome their fears and transition them from failure to success.
If you are having a hard time getting your employees to engage and follow you, it’s likely that you are breaking one or more of these 7 leadership rules:
How To Achieve Peak Performance From Yourself and Others... That’s why I created the Therapeutic Techniques to Leadership (LSD) program, to help business owners who want to become better leaders. It’s a program based on 3 leadership fundamentals:
